This page explains how The Evanston Edge decides what to publish and how we check it.
Independence
The Evanston Edge is independent. It is not affiliated with the City of Evanston or any government agency, political campaign, school district or university. Advertisers and sources do not review stories before publication.
Sourcing and verification
We rely on public records, meeting agendas and minutes, official data, published research, court and property records where appropriate, and reporting by other news organizations, which we credit and link. Facts are checked against the original document wherever one exists. We do not publish quotes we did not obtain ourselves or cannot attribute to a published source.
Archive pieces
Some older articles on this site cover Evanston businesses, districts and events from years past. They were written by our staff from the public record and are kept at their original web addresses. They describe things as they stood at the time; check with a business before visiting.
Advertising and sponsored content
News coverage is not for sale. Any sponsored or paid material will be clearly labeled as such and kept separate from staff reporting. Press releases distributed by newswire services may appear on the site and are identified by their byline.
Photos
Photos are credited in captions. Many come from Wikimedia Commons under Creative Commons or public-domain licenses, and we follow the attribution terms of each license.
Corrections
Our corrections process is described on the corrections page.
