Evanston’s best-known news sources get most of the attention, but a good deal of what residents know about the city comes from smaller publications with narrower audiences. They tend to cover what the larger sites skip: a school sports season, a neighborhood concern, a campus angle on a city decision.
Papers tied to a school
Two student newsrooms report on the city. The Daily Northwestern is run by Northwestern University students and covers the campus, the downtown around it, and municipal decisions that affect students. The Evanstonian serves Evanston Township High School and records its teams, clubs and policy changes from a student’s point of view.
Student reporting turns over every few years as classes graduate, so institutional memory is thin. That is a reason to read it alongside the professional outlets rather than instead of them.
Community-focused publications
The Evanston Sentinel is a free weekly serving the African American community. The Evanston RoundTable, a free online news site, and the community weekly Evanston Review cover civic life at a pace somewhere between daily and weekly.
A 2022 Daily Northwestern article examined several newer projects, including Our Evanston, Dear Evanston, Evanston Rules and The Informed Village, describing them as filling gaps left by the established outlets. Some such projects rely on newsletters and social media rather than a conventional website.
Using them together
Someone following a single issue, say a proposed development or a school budget, gets a fuller picture by reading across these sources. The student papers tend to surface campus angles, the weeklies the neighborhood reaction, and the online outlets the meeting-by-meeting detail. When two accounts disagree on a number or a date, the original public record settles it.
The Evanston Public Library also keeps a community organizations directory with a community news category, a useful starting point for finding current groups and outlets.
